NEBULAR PHASE OBSERVATIONS OF THE TYPE Ib SUPERNOVA 2008D/X-RAY TRANSIENT 080109: SIDE-VIEWED BIPOLAR EXPLOSION

چکیده
We present optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of supernova (SN) 2008D, associated with the luminous X-ray transient 080109, at > 300 days after the explosion (nebular phases). We also give flux measurements of emission lines from the H ii region at the site of the SN, and estimates of the local metallicity. The brightness of the SN at nebular phases is consistent with the prediction of the explosion models with an ejected Ni mass of 0.07 M⊙, which explains the light curve at early phases. The [O i] line in the nebular spectrum shows a double-peaked profile while the [Ca ii] line does not. The double-peaked [O i] profile strongly indicates that SN 2008D is an aspherical explosion. The profile can be explained by a torus-like distribution of oxygen viewed from near the plane of the torus. We suggest that SN 2008D is a side-viewed, bipolar explosion with a viewing angle of > 50 from the polar direction. The X-Ray Transient 080109 in NGC 2770: an X-Ray Flash Associated with a Normal Core-Collapse Supernova
Although it is generally thought that long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) are associated with core-collapse supernovae (SNe), so far only four pairs of GRBs and SNe with firmly established connection have been found. All the four GRB-SNe are among a special class of Type Ic—called the broad-lined SNe indicative of a large explosion energy, suggesting that only a small fraction of SNe Ibc hav...
متن کاملSHOCK BREAKOUT EMISSION FROM A TYPE Ib/c SUPERNOVA: XRF 080109/SN 2008D
The X-ray flash 080109, associated with SN 2008D, can be attributed to the shock breakout emission from a normal Type Ib/c supernova. If the observed emission is interpreted as blackbody emission, the temperature and radiated energy are close to expectations, considering that scattering dominates absorption processes so that spectrum formation occurs deep within the photosphere. The Xray emissi...
متن کاملVlbi Observations of Sn 2008d
We report on two epochs of VLBI observations of the Type Ib/c supernova SN 2008D, which was associated with the X-ray outburst XRF 080109, At our first epoch, at t = 30 days after the explosion, we observed at 22 and 8.4 GHz, and at our second, at t = 133 days, at 8.4 and 5.0 GHz. The VLBI observations allow us to accurately measure the source’s size and position at each epoch, and thus constra...
متن کاملStellar Forensics with the Supernova-GRB Connection (Ludwig-Biermann Award Lecture 2010)
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and Type Ib/c Supernovae (SNe Ib/c) are amongst nature’s most magnificent explosions. While GRBs launch relativistic jets, SNe Ib/c are core-collapse explosions whose progenitors have been stripped of their hydrogen and helium envelopes. Yet for over a decade, one of the key outstanding questions is which conditions lead to each kind of explosion and death ...
متن کاملMildly Relativistic X-ray Transient 080109 and Sn 2008d: towards a Continuum from Energetic Grb/xrf to Ordinary Ibc Sn
We analyze the hitherto available space-based X-ray data as well as ground-based optical data of the X-ray transient 080109/SN 2008D. From the data we suggest that (i) The initial transient (800 sec) is attributed to the reverse shock emission of a mildly relativistic (Γ ∼ a few) outflow stalled by the dense stellar wind. (ii) The subsequent X-ray afterglow (2 × 10 4 sec) can be ascribed to the...
